Quotient Rule

The quotient rule or derivatives quotient rule is often seen in calculus. The quotient rule for differentiation is explained below.

What is a quotient rule?

The quotient rule (illustrated below) is a method of finding the derivative dy/dx of a function y that is the quotient of two other functions (u and v) for which derivatives (du/dx, and dv/dx) exist.

In another word, the derivatives quotient rule works only if y is a function of x that can be written as u/v.

The functions u and v are also functions of x such as their derivatives exists mathematically. Note that v cannot be zero because then y doesn't exist.
